Chocolate Refreshers

makes 3 dozen bars
- 1¼ cups sifted AP flour
- ¾ tsp soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1¼ cups cut dates
- ¾ cup brown sugar, firmly packed
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup (6 oz) semi-sweet chocolate morsels or butterscotch morsels
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup orange juice
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped
Orange Glaze
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp soft butter
- 1 to 2 tsp grated orange rind
- 2 to 3 tbsp cream
Combine powdered sugar, butter, and orange rind. Blend in cream until of spreading consistency.
- Sift together flour, soda, and salt.
- Combine dates, brown sugar, water, and butter in a large saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until dates soften. Remove from heat.
- Stir in chocolate. Add eggs. Mix well.
- Add dry ingredients alternately with orange juice and milk. Blend thoroughly.
- Stir in chopped walnuts. Srpead batter in a well-greased 15x10x1 jelly roll pan.
- Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool and frost.
